SAN FRANCISCO-MANILA, PHILIPPINES

I had an excellent courier trip from San Francisco to Manila on Japan Airlines. I think they are the best airline I ever flew, and they bumped me up to business class on the return flight. Jupiter provided me with a night's lodging at the lovely Nikko Narita Hotel in Japan, plus a complimentary breakfast. They are my favorite courier company.

While I was in Manila I stayed at my friend's place, the Pension Natividad, where I was given a temporary job. The pension is located at 1690 M.H.del Pilar Street (Tel: 632-521-0524), only 150 meters from the Catholic church. Rooms are 800 pesos (US$31) with a/c or 580 pesos (US$23) with electric fan. Dormitory beds run just 150 pesos (US$6).

I also spent five nights at the Victoria Court Hotel for P500 (US$20) including TV and private bath. Most of the shopping centers are American style. Buses in the area cost about 15 cents, and taxis range between US$2 and $6. I mostly ate at U.S. fast food chains where the meals were inexpensive and the service was clean. Movies are really cheap, only 30 pesos (US$1.15) -- and they're all in English.

Be sure to get a good map of the city. When you use taxis, tell the driver to use the meter, or you'll pay more than you should.
